Former Clan player Bassi headed to USL Pro Combine

Burnaby, BC - Former SFU men's soccer student-athlete Derrick Bassi has been invited to the USL Pro Combine in Bradenton, Florida. The combine runs at the end of January.

Bassi spent his freshman year with the Clan in 2010. That year, Bassi was part of a SFU defense that surrendered just 14 goals in 21 contests. He was one of only two players to start and play in all 21 games.

He scored two goals, both of which were game-winners. He was a major factor in helping SFU become the first Canadian team to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship in the Clan's first year in the NCAA.

After a successful and productive freshman year, Bassi turned pro and signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Bassi captained the Vancouver Whitecaps Reserves for the past two seasons.

He was recently released from his contract to pursue other professional opportunities. Bassi has represented Canada with both the U-17 Canadian National team and the U-20 National team.

"I am incredibly happy for Derrick to receive another opportunity to pursue his soccer career," said head coach Alan Koch. "It was bitter sweet to see him sign with the Whitecaps after his freshmen year, and we have continued to watch his career closely. He is an excellent defender, who in the right environment, could have a lengthy professional career".
